My Grandparents War (PBS)
#1
O

4 1 hour eps. Brit celebs talk about their family during WWII - Helena Bonham Carter, Mark Rylance, Kristen Scott Thomas & Carry Mulligan - each has there own Ep and we watched Helena and most of Mark.
It’s a fascinating view of history and a peek into celebrity lives. We meet their families and see where they grew up, and learn some overlooked chapters of history. WWII was so brutal on the Brits and their tales of heroism are inspiring. The actors are all charismatic and although their surprise at learning some of the details of their ancestor’s struggles is staged, they are great actors and well it.

Helena, with her ever tousled hair, eccentric outfits and goofy shoes, is descended from diplomats and political activists. Her mum is charming but I couldn’t see the family resemblance except in some old pics.  The rest of her family looks nothing like her. She lived well in beautiful estates, confessing that she lived with her mum until she was 30. Her grandparents were instrumental in saving many Jews fleeing the nazis.

Mark’s granddad was a POW of Japan in Hong Kong. He was a banker who enlisted in a volunteer militia at precisely the wrong moment and was captured instantly then incarcerated for 4 years. I never knew that Japan had prisons in HK and I’ve been there, with the cfs, in a topless joint no less (it was that jeopardy champion’s idea and it was so very wrong).

We’ll probably watch more. Entertaining and educational.

No sword fights but plenty of real war atrocities. DOOM recommended so far.

Kristen Scott Thomas' granddad was a badass. A captain of a Brit destroyer, he was a Dunkirk, his ship laid mines and escorted supplies from Scotland to Russia, and he was at D-Day. It's an intense story - the hardships he endured were incredible. Kristen acts like she knew none of this, but she's a great actress so who really knows? Nevertheless, it's an inspirational story of wartime heroism.
