Woo-hoo! It only took three days, but I finally have my film uploaded and part of the European Film market.

Just watched Stro again at BIFF. Voted, too.

Leaves me a little sad, though.
In the Tudor Period, Fencing Masters were classified in the Vagrancy Laws along with Actors, Gypsys, Vagabonds, Sturdy Rogues, and the owners of performing bears.

Although I did not win best Documentary at BIFF, Martin Kove, from Cobra Kai and his son were the announcers for the Documentary categories. I'll count that as a minor victory.

On to Boston!

Watched the BIFF Stro.  Yes, it does get sad towards the end.  I voted half an hour ago, but assume the best documentary award is not viewer-driven.

I'm curious how they are going to handle the viewer award. I did ask for Analytics to see how the film performed.

The Best Documentary award was based on judging rather than voting.

This will have to hold you over until I can get the movie clip from the award show. I can record the screen, I just can do it with the audio.

I got a bit of the post-festival blues. No doubt aided by the email I got just before heading to bed informing me that Mill Valley Film Festival would not be validating me. According to the email, they felt gratitude towards me, they just didn’t want me.

I should be happy. I’m in four more festivals, one of which I hope does a big new conference tomorrow which I can share. That’s five more festivals than I was in for The Last Captain (I don’t count the Impact Festival. That’s a festival if you want to get a trophy) and there are still plenty of opportunities ahead.

Yet, my motivation this morning is low. I can rightfully say that no one has screened Stro in more than a week which doesn’t bode well. Although, a festival in Turkey screened The Last Captain. I entered that festival on a lark because they were looking for older films to show. One of the thing that drags on me is I would like to show a film in Ireland to show my friends there I’ve done well, but no one in Ireland has screened the film. The last festival I am currently entered in, Cork International, announces this Friday. I don’t hold out much hope.

Plus, there is Burbank. Because of their unlimited availability to watch, everyone that might have wanted to watch it could have done so over the weekend? Which means how do I interest other people in going to the three other festivals that will also be online? Pretty much all my family watched it this weekend. I told USA Fencing. I told US Veteran’s Fencing. I’m curious to see what numbers it generated. And I’m not hearing back from people who saw it. With the exception of my mother who was over the top enthusiastic as usual. Time to come up with a plan to get people to see it.

As I sat on the couch yesterday contemplating this, I gave serious consideration to going to Warsaw to be a part of that festival. I would do the 14 day quarantine if that is what they required. When I checked with the State Department, I saw that I wasn’t even allowed to travel there, even if I wanted to do that.

I think that’s it. Part of making films and entering festivals is being part of the festival experience. Seeing the film with an audience would be a part of that. I’d also like to do some Q&As. But no. It was just tQ and I watching the cheesy award show with lots of bad jokes.

The BIFF award show as pretty bad although good in that there was one and I got to be in anticipation until they announced. They had D-List celebrity presenters hand out the awards. The one that stands out, besides Mr. Kove, was the mother from ET.

After they read the name of the winner, they would cut to a speech everyone pre-recorded. Although in several cases people did not record acceptance speeches. Most of the speeches were bad and poorly shot, which doesn’t bode well for film makers.

In my mind I didn’t expect to win. Just getting into the festival was a success. And I do know, I had a 1 in 6 shot at the prize. It still was disappointing not to hear my name.

So, I got into a bunch of festivals liked I fervently hoped. I just can’t attend any of them. When the gods want to punish you, they grant your wishes.

All that being said, Boston starts a week from Thursday. They seemed to be as disorganized as BIFF.

The excitement of the award show. I did a screen grab of this just for you folks. Don't share. I'm working with BIFF to see if they have an official cut.

You've done well with this. Win or lose, there's a generation of fencers who are grateful that you broght honor to our maestro.
