The comment that has been going around the family at the moment is that old people who break hips usually only last a year after the break.
My mother went to rehab on saturday. It should take from 8-12 weeks. There was some mention that she could be fit to travel in the next two weeks. I don't see how that works out. The rehab facility is minutes from sister Stephanie's house.

CF - I figure you're off the hook since you switch up. Or maybe 3.5 years? Seeing the people where my mom lives, that might be a good thing.
Greg - I think my mom is 4-5 years out from her hip replacement. But she's an odds beater. She also has Atrial Fibrillation and Congestive Heart Failure, both of which supposedly give you 10 year survival prognosis, and she's at least a couple of years past that. So who knows.

My sisters and I are hard up against the decision of what to do with my mom once she returns from Rehab in Seattle. She wants to come home. She wants to live in her own home. And I get that. But that home is not the home for a person with serious mobility issues.
So, mom heard that I was moving. She thinks the best way to resolve her situation and mine is for Cindi and I to go live with her. Hey, it's not that funny.

My mom tried that on both my brother and I. I guess it's a standard old person gambit.

But of all her children, I would be the last she should even contemplate much less, say out loud.

A friend of mine just placed her alheimers Mom in a skilled nursing home over her really strident objections. Her dad, a narcissist, has been all but useless throughout this process which has been delayed several years while he tried to ignore the problem. It was a really hard thing for my friend to do, but she finally got her dad to cooperate and it is finally done.
I hope you and your sisters can come to a united solution and see it through.

But srsly, this is a tough one. I wonder the same about my mom, even though she's still very mobile. When Stacy's mom lived with us after her very dramatic divorce, she was planning on building a guest house in the backyard of our Macbeth property. She was completely fine then - it was just a psychic vampire play and one of the issues that estranged her from us. Now she is starting to suffer from something parkinson's-like, but she remarried and is living with her current husband (#3) in a trailer park in Monterey.
Hope you can get it sorted there, Greg.

The hand written note from my mother asking me to move in with her has arrived. Her logic seems to settle on the fact since we are moving anyway....

Wow.
While pondering your post, my eyes drifted to the reply box at the bottom of the screen, and in particular on an option to the left: "Disable Smilies."
What a fine T-shirt that would make.
I believe I'll finish this post with another

The difference between you and I, DM, is you are actually looking out for the well being of your mother. For me, it is less so.

Greg, sadly I think (from my experience) that you are moving into a difficult phase of the aging parent drama. On the other hand, since it's all been difficult for you, maybe no more so than usual.
