A Zed and Two Naughts (1985) by Peter Greenaway
#1
Years ago I tried watching Greenaway’s Vertical Features Remake, but just didn’t get it, so I put Greenaway on my do-not-watch list (earlier I’d seen Prospero’s Books, but didn’t know it was Greenaway). But because Greenaway’s A Zed and Two Naughts is currently a strong candidate on 366WeirdMovies.com for their list, I decided to revisit him.

When their wives are killed in a car crash, twin zoologists Oliver and Oswald (played by real twins Brian Deacon and Eric Deacon) become obsessed with the process of decay in flora and fauna, as well as with Alba, a beautiful woman who survived the crash but lost both legs. That’s just the tip of the iceberg. The movie is very surreal in a good way. The sets and cinematography are striking (Greenaway trained as a painter before switching to filmmaking). One of Greenaway’s quirks for this film was to experiment with every possible source of light. Great and quirky dialog, unpredictable story, all in all a lot of fun. Oh, while no animals are killed, there are several scenes of decay.

I’ll classify this as another doppelganger movie, because of the twins and how they behave and develop.

Definitely worth a doppelgander. Recommended.
