NMBC@The Hollywood Bowl 10/31/15
#1
Damn! The Hollywood Bowl is a nice venue! The Shoreline Amphitheater (22,000 capacity) is like the homeless cousin and The Berkeley Greek Theater (8,500 capacity) is the hipster sister-in-law. It's freaking huge (17,360 capacity - less than Shoreline but it's all seated) - Source: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_c ... hitheatres .

We had reserved a room at the nearby Best Western who had conveniently lost our reservation. Apparently each Best Western is individually owned and subscribe to a booking system that never passed our reservation on to them. Luckily Dee Dee's family lived nearby in Camarillo and gave us a place to crash, so just a warning to those making a trip to the area.

WTF is NMBC? Why "The Nightmare Before Christmas" of course!

After visiting the 6 trick-or-treat stations around the venue our bags were filled with candy and we parked ourselves into our seats. The video screens were showing a live feed of the entrants to the costume contest as they paraded onto a platform for pictures and moved on. Many (if not most) of the concertgoers were in costume, with heavy leanings towards "Beetlejuice" and "NMBC". I saw a guy in a Boy Scout + undies costume from "Forbidden Zone", a 'World of Warcraft' enchantress and 2 Darth Vaders with Mickey Mouse ears. The costume contest winner(s) were three girls that put together skeleton-reindeer costumes from NMBC.

The show started with an orchestral overture, then the movie played. The townspeople sang "This is Halloween" until Danny Elfman walked onstage to thundering applause to perform "Jack's Lament".

The spoken parts were left to the video side as the singers prepared for their next segment.

Danny nailed his parts, Katherine O'Hara (Sally) broke your heart and Ken Page (Oogie Boogie) was intimidating as hell.

All in all it was so much fun!

After the movie Danny reprised a couple of songs where he couldn't be two places at once. One of the reprises required the help of the original singer - Paul Reubens (Pee-Wee Herman).

Finally the insanity of the crowd got to Danny and he came back out with an electric guitar. He said "I'm going to do something I said I would never do again" and launched into an (albeitly slow) "Dead Man's Party".

The night was as close to magical as a Danny Elfman fan could get.

PS: Getting out of The Hollywood Bowl sucks balls. Just park far away and sleep it off.

I'd been hearing about this concert all week on our local Alternative Station. They gave away a ton of tickets. I'm glad you had a great time.

Nobody parks at the Bowl. You either take the shuttle in or have your driver drop you off and pick you up.
So much for the flickr badge idea. Dammit
