Horns
#1
Harry Potter may have killed his g/f. Everyone thinks he did. Then he grows horns. He also gets powers where people confess their darkest secrets and obey his simple commands. Poor Harry. He just wants to make it right.

This was quite entertaining throughout - an adult fairytale, a whodunnit, a black comedy, an engaging story, a brilliant role for Potter actually. Harry will never shake off Harry, despite the fact that he's a decent actor. In Horns, his g/f is a ginger and he talks to snakes. He's an outsider with special insight, not quite the chosen one, but the horned one. Shot in the lush and rainy regions near Seattle's sounds, which a grunge-tinged soundtrack plus a lot of vintage Bowie, the quick gear shifts to get around the turns in the story arcs were chuckle-worthy, as long as it's not taken too seriously. The Biblical references are amusing, especially if you like films like Dogma. The flashback scenes with Harry as a child which don't quite work because we are all fully aware of what Harry looked like as a child.

That being said, of the main three, Harry, Ron & Hermione, this is the most successful post-HP flick so far.

I made my parents watch this. They are less than pleased. I'm hearing lots of talk from the basement about what exactly is going on, only with more colorful language.

I didn't watch it with them because I like my ear drums.

Good work, Greg.
Hmmm. The library has 3 copies. Maybe I'll give it a gander -- though they're all checked out right now.
Then again, I've hacked the library's online system and know who has the copies, and their addresses. If their curtains are a bit parted, I could watch from outside.
Will update later.

You made your 'rents watch a film you hadn't watched?

Good move.

I read the book. It had moments.
Before you criticize someone, walk a mile in their shoes. That way when you criticize them, you're a mile away and you have their shoes.

The film didn't inspire me to read it however. Did the book ever offer any explanation in the end? The movie just leaves it all hanging, but that was okay. I think what sold the film for me was Harry as I am fond of him in that Dumbledore sort of way (I know, that sounds bad) and the lush Seattle scenery. And it was parsed with some humorous moments.

Nope. I found the ending of the book sketchy.

Typical King. Great build up with a weak ending.

Joe Hill would be Stephen King's son. Blood runs true!

...or perhaps I did and forgot. Why read when you can watch the movie?

Someone should make a movie that's just the scrolling text of the book it's based upon.
I know I would go.
If it was a free screener.

Then again, maybe not.
