Jiro Dreams of Sushi
#1
Another film that I watched on the trip back from Istanbul.

A documentary about an elderly Japanese man who's been making sushi most of his life. Never takes vacation. Works all the time. Only stopped briefly to have a heart attack.

His middle son left to start a competing sushi shop. That shop is "not as good" (Splitter!!). The eldest son stayed (was kept from college) to learn the business and will be taking it over someday (he's currently in his 50's). There was some sub-story of an intern that's been making rice for 5 years. Someday, they'll let him move up a rung and do the next task.

The main message is focus on the details. Make great things. At all costs. Your life will be measured by these great things. Nothing else matters.

Obviously, I found this movie depressing. Jiro seems like a dick. I'm not sure if it's the parallels I see to the fruit factory that I work at, or that I was watching this at 4am after watching 2 other full-length films as I couldn't sleep on the plane.

I don't think I could watch it again to find out.

I read some review that raved about this and have been toying with checking it out on netflix, but given your review, well... no swordfights or bollywood numbers, so I'll probably give it a miss.
