Cage match mixed martial arts (MMA) is now legally sanctioned in CA, although I have heard that MMA has been happening in Indian Casinos. I've seen a lot of this stuff on video but it's the first time I've seen it live. It was very satisfying. Quite a range of bouts, submission wrestling and BJJ, of course, but one played like a straight up boxing match, another pitched a kicker and puncher against a wrestler. There was the middle weight championship belt (awarded by none other than Chuck Norris) a 5 minute, 5 round match that was brutal. The other bouts went 5 minutes, 3 rounds - there where 13 bouts. Someone bled in almost every match. Cung Le (who calls my boss Gigi 'mom') just kicked the crap out of his opponent, working the head, middle and flanks - many solid kicks to the head. He finished him with a reverse side kick to the midsection that bounced him off the cage and back into Cung's awaiting forearm/elbow, which clotheslined him. It was total Tony Jaa. It didn't even go the whole first round. Frank Shamrock, another San Jose man, took out Gracie in 21 seconds in teh main event. He caught him with a right to the chin before he could even get a guard up, and as he stumbled, he caught him with another right, then as he fell, he jumped up top of him, unleashing a flurry of rights that literally dribbled Gracie's head between the mat and his right fist three times until the ref pulled him off.
We managed all access press passes. It was sold out, the largest attended MMA event in the USA so far. Gigi gave me $20 expense for dinner, which I spent on beer and a shot of Jack. Our seat were on the floor towards the back, next to the entrance glory ramp. Legalizing MMA is the only thing Arnie has done right. I'd definitely to another.

I regret having missed it.
Cung Le doesn't have many more fights in him, I suspect.
Better catch him while we can. I saw some Vegas footage on the web from a couple years ago. Wow.
And was Gracie considered a contender? He looks a bit like a middle-aged businessman -- going up against a hungry monster with the steely gaze. Was he grist for the mill? Driven into it by his family name? Was he hearing his own dirge as he entered the cage?
Or do I underestimate him?
I'm nobody's pony.

...I felt the last two fights on the card were manipulative. Both set up a local champ against a fall guy. The disappointing part was the fall guy fell too soon. One of the things that I didn't predict (and I don't know why not) was that the crowd atmosphere wasn't too far from what LB, KB, ED & I saw when we used to go to pro wrestling. That's the 'gladiator' part - it's the audience. Puder, another fighter, was even part of a WWE program, and brought the total pro wrestler sensibility to nis glory ramp entrance. He even entered to Eye of the Tiger - how cheesy is that? Martial arts have been cursed by Stallone.
In Japan and Mexico, the line between pro wrestling and MMA fights is less clear. You might see masked fighters in MMA in Japan. Of course, masked fighters rule in Mexico with Mucha Libre, Mucha Lucha, etc. There, it's more about the fight promoter that distinguishes between 'real' and entertaiment. Pro wrestling in the US is defined as strictly entertaiment, mostly for insurance/liability reasons.
BTW, I can't remember if I showed y'all this:

The final Strikeforce event goes down this weekend. Once the Zuffa/UFC borg bought it up, the writing was on the wall. I've seen the most stadium MMA through Strikeforce, of which I've reported them all here. They always treated me right. There were some AWESOME fights.
I will miss them.
