Danbury School Shooting

I was reading an article about the tragedy in Connecticut and the following statement caught my eye. "It is the worst shooting in a U.S. elementary school in recent memory" Recent Memory? Seriously? I can go back a lot further than recent memory and state unequivocally that it's he worst shooting at an elementary school in a hundred years.

That phrase jarred me as well. I sat there in mid-article, rereading the quote, thinking, "What exactly does recent memory mean?"
