Real Steel

So Spielberg, it hurts. Where is my beloved Twilight Zone episode? It was fun to see with CF. The crowd loved it - lots of good laughs from the plucky kid. I found myself more entertained throughout it than I thought I would be, but it's Spielberg candy and I must struggle to retain the details for my official KFM review, which I'll have for you later.

No sword fights. Not a DOOM flick by any stretch of the imagination.

...he bakes a tasty squash bread.

You know, I must now recant my "not a DOOM flick" comment as DM & CF saw it together and greg is headed that way despite DM's cautionary review.

I read the original short story, Steel, last night. It has so little to do with the film, but the credits did say 'inspired' or 'adapted' or something like that, so it made no pretense.

It's fighting. It's fighting with Wolverine. How is that not a Doom flick?

You could argue that it's silly robot fighting, but when has silly been a mark against it being a Doom flick.

Might still wait for video, which is my current trend.

See the original TZ episode here: http://www.123video.nl/playvideos.asp?MovieID=840253

The TZ version is pretty literal to Matheson's original short story, accurate right down to the dialog, only with the addition Rod's narration, which of course makes it a thousand times better. Nothing beats the original TZ. Nothing at all. Best show ever. EVER.

Yeah, it was more entertaining (why am I suddenly thirsty for Dr Pepper?) than it had any right to be. The boy seemed underpowered talentwise and relied on his puppy-dog look to get his way with Wolverine and Wolverine's girlfriend and relatives. Then suddenly he would become this marketing maestro (I am so inexplicably wanting a Dr Pepper) for no apparent reason. A very half-baked tale that really needed another run through a really good scriptwriter's typewriter, but I guess they couldn't find a typewriter, which is why so many Hollywood movies stink these days.

Wolverine was incredibly immature and I'm seriously doubting he ever learned anything. The boy was a lot more on the ball but seemed to learn from Wolverine and ended up equally immature. Lots more I could say, but I desperately need to hit the store for a Dr Pepper -- maybe a whole case. I haven't seen any of the Transformers movies, but I suspect that this movie was entertaining in the same way those movies are entertaining.
I'm nobody's pony.

Cranefly lives? Damn. Lost another bet. Never, ever bet with DM.
In the Tudor Period, Fencing Masters were classified in the Vagrancy Laws along with Actors, Gypsys, Vagabonds, Sturdy Rogues, and the owners of performing bears.

I just had a Dr. Pepper for lunch. I almost never drink soda. Goddamn product placement.

As for bet payment, it had best be forthcoming soon. Pom Daddy needs new shoes. Seriously.

Just finished watching this one. Deeply, deeply disappointed with Evangeline Lily's character. It's like someone said there needs to be a chick in this film, and then they forgot to have a reason, except to have her cue the audience as to when to cry and show that someone thinks Huge Jackman is cute. Oy. The only thing interesting was the fights.
Before you criticize someone, walk a mile in their shoes. That way when you criticize them, you're a mile away and you have their shoes.

As the Queen pointed, out it was her job to cry.

It's a movie built for poking holes. (If Huge is so in love with Evangeline, how come he has a kid with another woman) Everything is dumbed down. Huge just plays an idiot. I kept wanting to call someone on my new sprint phone and talk about my love for Dr. Pepper. It's funny that a 3-D flick had very 2-D characters! (That joke only works if the films was in 2-D)

The amazing things were the robots how they blended so well into their surroundings. I kept asking myself how they did it. Was it all CGI? Did they have a few full scale robots? It was the best thing about a crappy movie.
