While I love The Crepe Place for being the only place in town to host really awesome music, it really sux as a venue. When the audience is ~30 people, "intimate" is nice. When it's ~75, it's not. Can't see shit...
Emily Wells. Something compelled me to go. No idea why. The TV screens at the bar were playing "Phantom of the Paradise". Was having some weird retro experience. I saw that in the theater when it came out with my folks. According to IMDB (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0071994/), that came out in 1974, which means I was ~9 when I saw it. That's some fucked up shit for a kid...Paul Williams, in general, is fucked up shit...Well, anyway, I was re-living that, while listening to Emily Wells (who I couldn't see--See above).
Emily Wells is hard to describe. Lots of samples and loops. Plays violin, guitar, uke. Smokey voice. Reminds me of someone, but I can't pin it down now. Feels 1920's...Billie Holiday? Drummer and stand-up bass accompanying. Nice grooves. I wish I was stoned. Make up for it with 3 whiskey sours. She's rapping. w/violin. It's really cool. Plays a Lil Kim song and a bunch of originals. Me likey...especially this one:

PS: The Crepe Place is the only place in town that I've ever seen a cockroach. This happened about two weeks ago. It freaked me out. I will never eat there again, even though I love the place. I presume that the booze is cockroach free, and completely endorse this as a bar and music venue.

Phantom of the Paradise => El Dingo's favorite film. At least that is the rumor.
So much for the flickr badge idea. Dammit

I have a memory (probably false) of seeing 'Phantom of the Paradise'with DM as a double-feature with 'Wizards'.
I think we watched both movies twice.
Any recollection of this, DM?
Anyway, yes - it is still one of my favorite films. My avatar on another forum is a screen grab of Swan (Paul Williams) and Winslow Leach.

Phantom & Wizards. Friggin' awesome double feature. It didn't get any better until in the pre-CGI daze...

So Emily Wells has a song on the soundtrack for the new Park Chan Wook/Nicole Kidman movie "Stoker". Here's the trailer for the poster (?):

Looks promising.
Wonder if there will be as much drawing in the movie as in the preview. So many movies about artists get all caught up in soap opera and never penetrate the mystique of artistic creation.
Something like that....

...which means I can get into the screener, if only I can make a martial connection...

I was invited to a screener for Stoker last Friday and had a very tenuous idea for an article which would have incorporated OldBoy, The Last Stand, Musa, War of Arrows and Gangnam Style (all reviewed here I think, save TLS). But I bailed. One of my fav Shaolin coaches is subbing at my school for a week, so I opted to train instead. I'm bailing on Muse tonight for the same reason. Well, sort of. I would have done Muse w/T if it wasn't a school night.

I watched this one on the plane, too. It's very slow and takes awhile to comprehend what is going on. It starts with a funeral. Nicole Kidman is the widow and Mia Wasikowska is the Wednesday Addams-like daughter. An estranged uncle appears. Hilarity ensues. With it's quirkiness and conspicuous lighting, soundtrack, and camera work, initially, I thought the movie came off as a darker version of a Wes Anderson movie, but as the story unfolded, that all became less noticeable and it became more Park-Chan Woo/Hitchcock-like. I'd recommend it. I fell asleep on the plane and had an awful dream after, so I guess that's an endorsement of sorts…

PS: oh site master, is there any way to move part of this thread into its own "Stoker" thread in Doom Media? (Starting with the Wed Nov 28, 2012 12:33 am post with the Stoker trailer)

...then again, that's all I need, more awful dreams.
I think the thread should stay here. It's Chan Park Wook, after all.
BTW, we've been wanting to try the Crepe place as it is just a short stroll from our house and we love crepes. We even have a crepe maker. But I forgot about your cockroach comment.

I only saw one once and we all decided that it was a stowaway on the flowers that it appeared on.
The Crepe Place is decent. Personally, I like the Chicken Tenders and the artichoke that's on the side menu. The Clam Chowder is not my favorite (too thin). Oh, and their dinner salads are enormous…be warned.
If the weather is good, sit out back. If you're by yourself, sit at the bar. They make good cocktails and there's generally a good cast of people on the stools. They are always playing classic movies (e.g. "Monster Island"). I used to go to watch Giants games (not having cable…). If you are their around 8-8:30p, you can often catch a band doing their soundcheck and might be able to stay for their show if the door guy forgets to ask the people at the bar to pay up or git...
I don't know if they have anything vegetarian, but Lillian's down the street is one of the best restaurants in town. Their always packed, but I found out you can place a to go order and skip some of that hassle. Don't forget to pick up some bread and roasted garlic!

We have reservations for Tramonti tonight. Got some friends stopping by. So many good places to eat in the Cruz.
Maybe we should move this to 'travel'.

I finally saw Stoker. Only took me 8 years to get around to it.
Enjoyable in that twisted Chan Park Wook way, yet Hollywood with Mia Wasikowska, Nicole and Matthew Goode. Mia was quite good as Wednesday as tg aptly put it, even upstaging Nicole who was quite gorgeous in this. It's a coming of age gothic horror tale with an ominous soundtrack, clever cinematography and editing, and a subtly perverse color scheme. I enjoyed it. It was engrossing enough. Not Chan's best but definitely intriguing, and it had some fresh visions and cinematic stylistic foreshadowing that was good. No sword fights but some good pencil and belt action. I'm only going to recommend this to DOOM Chan fans.

Well damn.
I watched this again completely forgetting that I saw it previously. My lord - my memory is so blurry. I blame the pandemic for this one. The pandemic has been extra blurry.
I’m shocked on how much I didn’t remember - like almost the entire film. There were only a few scenes that seemed faintly familiar - Mia being bullied (but that was such a trope it reminded me of many films), meeting Whip at the bar, the shower scene, the end. I suppose I’m grateful because that kept it fresh.
Judging from my previous review, which stands in general, I liked it more this time. Park infuses it with such style. There’s so much tension building with how he moves his shot and works his soundtrack. The extreme close ups of random things, the color schemes, the use of architecture - brilliantly crafted throughout. There’s some really good stuff in here when it comes to stylish filmmaking and my only change of opinion from my previous review is that I now fully recommend it for D00M based on its artistry alone.
I’m astonished that I forgot I saw this. It’s worrisome. Covid brain maybe? But I never tested positive ever…
