Fire on the mountain!
That's actually the Caldor fire - see the UC Fire Activity Map, where most of the state is covered in fire icons. Our friends who live in Meyers (just south of the lake) left early, while 50 was still open. It's been closed for almost a week. It looks like the fire is maybe 2-4 miles from their house.

The place I stayed at on Saturday - the couple that owns it owns a cabin in Tahoe. We've stayed there. It's lovely. Their tenants have evacuated because of the smoke. Their property is not under immediate threat.

Just prior to buying this new place, they were looking at a property on a river. That is probably gone now.

Another friend, a Buddhist monk (not Shaolin) who I helped build his ensen hot tub many years ago in Palo, he also has a cabin that is bordering Caldor. We've stayed there too. Also lovely.

I'm still processing Tiltill.

Stacy reached out to his wife who is one of her clients. Her response is below:

Quote:I thought I should let you know that our Tahoe House is gone, now. The video footage shows it burned to the ground. So incredibly sad!

It was a magnificent house, two stories, four huge bedrooms, a deck, a fully loaded kitchen, living room with a commanding forest view, a well stocked library, tasteful art, a nice collection of board games, and a nearby steam room. We don't know if they had fire insurance.

Depends on the mortgage. If they have a mortgage, most likely they had to have fire insurance as a condition of the loan. I have fire insurance and it is exorbitant up here. But now is the time that pays off.

According to the UC Fire map, our friends' house is in the area of Meyers where the fire split. There's a little strip of unburned land along Hwy 50. I thought maybe they were trying to keep the road open for their vehicles. There's also a city fire station there, a Forest Service fire station and a CalTrans depot with some equipment, so maybe that's the reason. Or maybe it's random. Lucky so far anyway.

Well, the smoke from the Complex Fire down near King's Canyon continue to plague us. If you look at the satellite image, the entire San Joaquin Valley is completely full. Hopefully the storm will clean us out this week. AQIs have been in the 160 to 180 range. I feel like I've smoked several packs of cigarettes.

No fire, but the wind is howling. It's blowing so much dust the AQI is over 300.

Probably didn't help the AQI any that there was a fire down in Madera right next Highway 99.

AQI is back to 23.
