You don't know how worried you are until the worry lifts.
I've been emailing Sandy Tu, Mrs. GM Tu, since I started the project. I talk to Sandy because she is the gate keeper. I didn't get a single response to any of my emails. It would be a pretty crappy documentary if I didn't get the focus of the documentary in the actual documentary. I imagined that Sandy was done with me because it had been so long since last we spoke. I would not blame her. But I kept sending emails.
It was kind urgent that I talk to them, because I was under the impression GM Tu was back in Los Angeles. There was a post saying he was coming back to Los Angeles to start up an Iron Crotch class. If you don't know, for the longest time, GM Tu has divided his time between his school here and his school in Taipei. The main focus of his location changed about eight years ago to weight lifting. More specifically power lifting. I was unsure if they did any martial arts classes there. If I couldn't film GM Tu in Los Angeles, I was seriously considering going to Taipei to film him there. Where the money for that adventure would come from, I have no idea. But if I had to go, I would.
On Tuesday, The Queen got a request from a friend for a house sitter down in Los Angeles over the Halloween week. She asked me if I wanted to house sit so I could be in Los Angeles for my interviews. This would be a great solution to the problem of where would I stay when I was down there doing interviews. I do have the one potential interview with the Jade Egg lady that was supposed to occur end of October/beginning of November. As yet Jade Egg lady has not responded to follow up emails to set a date, but still.
I was kind of running out of hope with respect to the Tu's. My last stab would be to call them. I have an old phone number for them, but I was hesitant to call them for fear of waking them up in Taiwan when I rang. I also had a number for the gym in Los Angeles. Since things were heating up because I had the place to stay. I decided I would call the gym.
Surprise, surprise, I reached one of the Tu kids, Jenny. She was at the wedding. She is running a chinese medicine clinic out of the gym. She recognized my name and knew who I was. She was busy but would be available later in the day to talk about GM Tu. I called Jenny after five and we talked for quite a bit. GM Tu was indeed in town and would be for a while. He would be coming to Northern California, of course, for a few of the days I will be in Los Angeles, but then he will back. Jenny is going to check the schedule and get back to me when GM Tu will be available for an interview. I also asked for some calligraphy and possibly a lift. But I will be overjoyed with an interview.
Things are looking up.
Still waiting to hear back from my reluctant interviewee in the Bay Area for next week.
