Private club for me means it is being run for profit with it’s own dedicated facility, aka: Run as a business. In our day many were run out of colleges or rec programs, the coaches had day jobs, and the quality of the fencing was provincial. Back in our day, the US was a third-rate fencing country. We’re now first rate (in foil and sabre at least).
In the Tudor Period, Fencing Masters were classified in the Vagrancy Laws along with Actors, Gypsys, Vagabonds, Sturdy Rogues, and the owners of performing bears.
