While others on Doom are watching movies solely in search of nipples, I set my sights considerably higher. A case in point, Pathonpatham Noottandu (2022).
It's about the person of the title who is viewed as the god of the lower castes. He's a weird duck, because in many cases he prevails by being filthy rich. But also he's a top-notch fighter, and he goes shirtless throughout, showing off his strong build.
Prime first aroused my curiosity in this movie by flagging it as containing nudity. Nudity in an Indian movie? This I had to see..
The lower castes are being oppressed, and taxed, in two ways. There is a mustache tax. Yes, if you sport a mustache, you must pay a tax for the privilege. The movie is particularly hot with mustaches worn defiantly. Oh, the second way. If you cover up your breasts, you must pay a tax. The women rebel fiercely against this, and higher cast men must frequently strip defiant women or whip them for their defiance.
The camerawork is brilliant. Every time a woman has her top stripped off, the cameraman moves around behind her. When whipped into submission, she disrobes with the cameraman slipping behind her.
There are only two slip-ups. Once, when a very old woman is shown topless. But she gets blurred. Again, when a topless goddess statue with huge honkers is shown. I guess with statues it's allowed.
Not to give away the details of the ending, but it is stated that through the courageous actions of the god of the lower castes, these primitive taxes on the lower castes were abolished.
Brief pause.
Then the movie says, actually, these primitive taxes continued in some parts of India well into the 20th century.
