Mike Vanderhule is a classmate of mine who I met for the first time at our reunion over the summer. We shared pizza at Jake's. He's also the current drummer for Y&T. He has these thoughts about an encounter he had with Taylor Hawkins.
Quote:In shock. So sad! RIP Taylor Hawkins.
A quick Taylor Hawkins story. 2001 or 2002 I was in Cabo and went to Cabo Wabo, Sammy wasn’t in town, I just wanted to see the club. There was a commotion in the corner by the stage and all of a sudden Taylor jumps up and sings a song, kills it. Then he jumps on drums and introduces the one and only Roger Taylor, legendary drummer from queen, for those of you who don’t know, and Roger sang rock ‘n’ roll by Led Zeppelin, It was awesome! After the show I was getting a burrito on the street, absorbing some of the alcohol, and these two drunk guys come walking down the dirt road arm in arm. Nobody recognized them, and I jumped off my stool and walked out there to extended my hand to Roger. I told him I was a professional drummer and how much I admired him and what his career meant to me, for me that was like meeting Ringo or Charlie Watts. Then I turned to Taylor and said, "Any other time man I"… and before I could even get it out he said, “I know, me too!“ And proceeded to bow to Roger along with me. If we only had cell phones with cameras back then. This was a fun hang (below) at a Guitar Center Drum Off final in LA years ago.
As a matter of fact, my anger does keep me warm
