Random STRO tale.
I got a call from Rann Phibbs, who was the epee team captain when I was a freshman. Since SJSU, we crossed paths once at the Warfield at a Phil & Friends show. He had seen the doc that HK shared with him and reached out.
It was cool. We chatted for over an hour last night and caught up. Rann took my under his wing when I first started with Stro, before the Yeti joined. Rann came from a rich family, lived in the Cruz for years with a growing Marine supply company that went from a few stores to hundreds under his watch, continued blowing glass, and now sails boats professionally. He used to get a lot of gigs from Roy Disney, sailing his boat from HI back to CA, making good money. He caught me up on another teammate from that period, Brian Reed, who made a fortune in TX from a nail salon franchise. Brian bought a boat and hires him to captain it. We both reflected on how privileged we were to have been under Stro, and some of the life lessons he taught us. We promised to get together after the pandemic. He owns a plot of land that is several acres in the East Bay somewhere. It was really great to reconnect.
So thanks for that Greg.
