After I polished off that Jaymo and Tullamore, I've still been on my job quest budget so been drinking bottom shelf Irish - got a bottle of Egans. Egads. Tastes a bit like fuel. I've got a few nice bottles stowed away unopened but my working nitecaps have been low end. There's an open bottle of Powers in the kitchen cabinet that Stacy likes for Irish coffees, and I've been nipping at that too, so when we made hot toddys a few days ago, it was spent. I had to replace that.
Powers changed their bottle and that confused me. I picked up some Gold Label but I was thrown by the new bottle and wound up buying some 3 Swallows too, just to be sure. I don't like the new bottles. They actually came out at the beginning of this year but it's been ages since I've been in a proper liquor store so I hadn't noticed until now. The old style was more traditional and you got those little bottleneck medals. I liked those. However, the new bottle was cheaper. Powers Gold Label is a good bite for my buck. It's cinnamon nutmeg spicy with an apple and pear cider overtone, but ultimately quite smooth. I once disdained Powers as being Ireland's JD, but I've totally come around, especially after a night with John Lane in Dublin. I've yet to spring for a bottle of that here. Someday, when I'm feeling solvant again...
