I think it gets real when you know someone who died from it.
I've had a few friends contract it. One was asymptomatic except for he got covid toes. Another, well, his whole family got it (this is the one that I might have been exposed to and forced me to get tested). They were all really sick for a week but recovered except for their sense of smell. That was a TC guy, another who got laid off, so we've lost contact.
I can't remember if I mentioned this earlier here but my best friend from grad school's father-in-law died from it. He was in a rest home - no funeral, no closure - he just was gone. That was early into this.
I have a lot of medical friends on the frontlines so watching their feeds and chatting with them has made it all too real.
