Yep, Forbidden Planet is my favorite SF movie. When I think back on my teenage years, on what so appealed to me about SF -- well, Forbidden Planet is the very embodiment.
2001 -- A Space Odyssey made an impression on me in my late teens, but I felt it was very uneven (I drifted to sleep at one point).
Star Wars is my second favorite western (some people see it as a WWII film, but I see it as a western). I hesitate to legitimize all that spacial noise by calling it SF.
I probably liked ET far better than I probably should have. Someday I'll have to revisit it and see if my high opinion is deserved, or whether I was just in a maudlin mood.
Close Encounters was very very uneven. I try to like it more than it warrants because I personally know Jacques Vallee -- the ufologist upon whom Spielberg based the main scientist.
There's other, smaller films. Blade Runner (yes, it seems smaller), which I couldn't appreciate because of Harrison Ford's very flat performance. Minority Report, which I thought was a small gem (I thought Cruise did a fine job). Scanner Darkly, another small gem. And hundreds of others.
But when it comes to the very embodiment of SF, it has to be Forbidden Planet. Forbidden Planet is king.
Until someone pulls off a successful screenplay of The Stars My Destination.
