The One (2001)

Rewatched this because it relates to another essay. It's Jet Li vs. Jet Li in a multiverse-driven version of Highlander, but instead of killing all the other swordsmen for the quickening, you gotta kill all your alternate identities in all of the other universes. It's a lot of wife fu and CGI effects because the last two Jets have all the superpowers of the previous 123 Jets. The notable part is a Kung Fu thing - evil Jet fights with Xingyi and good Jet fights with Bagua. That won't mean much to anyone here but the cfs, and it's not even mentioned overtly in the dialog, but there's easter eggs for anyone familiar with the lore of those styles. Corey Yuen is the choreographer who did a lot of direction of Jet in the 90s and delivered some amazing work with Yes Madam, Hero and Dragons Forever. Here he's overshadowed by his need to use physics-defying special effects and clearly working up to the finale fight of Xingyi v Bagua, set in a random industrial factory that showers sparks, spits green fluids, and bursts into steam and flame randomly. The finale fight has its moments but ultimately gets lost in itself. The Xingyi v Bagua in the spark shower is kinda cool, but the details are lost on the uninitiated. And the whole film is dated with cheesey heavy metal guitar riffs. Jet is good tho, show some acting chops here and there, just enough to get by. It's an early Jason Statham doing exactly what he always does - he's got one note and kudos to him for getting so far on something so simple.

No sword fights but lots of fights. Not DOOM recommended, even for th cfs if they don't remember it.
