Vita Nostra by Marina and Sergey Dyachenko

Harry Potter by way of Dostoyevsky. I think.

I think it was Hogwarts if Hogwarts was a Russian Industrial School of magic, especially if you were recruited to be a magician with threats of harm against your loved ones if you refused.

I'm thinking about 50 to 60% of the time, I had not idea what was going on in this book. I nearly gave it back to the library on several occasions. But I soldiered on.

First off, being a magic user in this world is not fun at all. I think for the first two years of school, everyone wanted to kill themselves rather than continue their lessons. It's all very opaque and twisty. And they never mention magic. And most of the time you follow our main wizard just be tortured by her studies and what she is becoming. There aren't any great wizard battles or quests or magical creatures. It's just 3 years in the town of Torpo. It wasn't fun.

And at the end of the schooling, you are no longer human. You are deconstructed and become a part of language. Our hero, becomes a password. No, I haven't gone all CF. Everyone becomes a form of speech.

There might be a sequel to this book since they only got through year 3 of 5. The only reason I might find it is to see what the whole point of this exercise is. Why do they want to magic users in this world or whatever it is they are doing.
As a matter of fact, my anger does keep me warm
