Chicago Sun Times just published a list of 20 NPC songs. Topping the list was Everybody was Kung Fu Fighting. I hear some NPC peeps play that at weddings. I just posted the artcle on KFM -http://www.kungfumagazine.com/forum/showthread.php?60335-Everybody-was-Kung-Fu-Fighting-by-Carl-Douglas&p=1311889#post1311889
That being said, I'm all for outing old songs/traditions/movies/statues/whatev for their NPC-ness. Not much we can do about it now, really, but that history is so deep and embedded. It's good to point out the issues. Doesn't mean you have to stop listening to them or playing them. You just need to be woke.
As a side note, and in all seriousness, right now I'm counseling a friend who was raped. She's a young bright nursing student. It's very tragic because it was faculty and the university is protecting him. She still has a few years to finish her degree and it has put her in a very precarious position. She's suffering from severe PTSD and paranoia. I've worked with rape victims before but never with a university factor like this. Over the summer, I went through a rape crisis awareness class - it was something I volunteered for with some friends who work psych with me at festivals. Sexual assault at festivals has been a growing problem over the last few years. On top of that, I'm working with an author, another rape survivor, to bring her story to KFM. It's delicate for so many reasons.
When you bear witness to the damage done, you have no mercy for these motherfucking rapists or anyone who might condone or protect them, or even just turn a blind eye.
