The Dog Stars by Peter Heller
#1
This was kind of a "literary" post-apocalyptic novel. Set at a remote airfield after a pandemic, with mentions of effects of global warming. The author has an MFA in writing and is an NPR contributor. So he can write. The problem was that he has his main character thinking deep thoughts too much, and it got annoying. On the other hand, he introduced a nice twist, that the protagonist lives with a survivalist that he really doesn't like, but whose skills keep him alive. He knows how to fly, so the survivalist needs him to do aerial reconaissance. Turned sort of happy at the end. Includes a nice poem by Li Po, "When will I be home?"
