Ah, more laziness. I stayed up late to help my father to bed but he and my mother opted to stay up even later so they could watch the end of the Notebook.
I set my alarm for 5:30 so I wouldn't sleep the whole day away. I peaked in my parent's bedroom to see if they were asleep.
The day before, I cleared the path around the bed so my father and his walker would have a clear shot to the bathroom.
He had his walker. He had a plan what could go wrong?
I heard the crash around 5:45 from my parents bedroom. Not a big crash like yesterday's dresser clearing crash, but something fell up there. I went up the stairs and found my father sitting on the end of the bed. His walker had hooked the cord for the clock radio and dragged it from the dresser. The cord was still wrapped around the wheel of his walker. I untangled it and put the walker in front of my father.
Except. Except. Except.
My father is really weak and a little disoriented at 5 in the am. His only thought is go to bathroom. As he was sitting on the edge of the bed, he started to slip to the floor, his legs unable to support him. I grabbed him around the chest to force him back on the bed. He would hold for a second, but then start to slip again. I grabbed him again and tried to drive him back on the bed. He yelped in pain from the force against his arms.
Gravity won as gravity always seems to do. He was back on the ground at the foot of the bed, falling in and out of sleep. I tried to find something to help me get him back on his feet, but I couldn't come up with anything. My father is pushing 280 at the moment and I can't dead lift that.
My mother pushed the panic button and the EMTs were on there way. Again. Next time I need to put a pot of coffee on for the boys and girls when she pushes that button.
It was a slightly different crew from yesterday, but still the same lead. I helped out by clearing the hallway and making sure the stair lift was down a level.
There was some miscommunication with the Emergency services and the Paramedics joined us as well. We had five emergency personnel in the bedroom with my parents at one point. His vitals were okay. he experienced some acute pain when they lifted him in his shoulder area.
As soon as he was back in bed, he went right to sleep. I wished my EMT and Paramedic friends a good day and off they went.
