Christmas on Mars (2008) by Wayne Coyne, Bradley Beesley, George Salisbury
#1
Another movie on the 366weirdmovies list.

So that’s who the Flaming Lips are.  I’d heard of them, but had no exposure to their work.  They don’t play musical instruments in this movie.  Rather, they act, or try to.  The film is frontman Wayne Coyne’s brainchild, and it took seven years, on and off, to complete.  It is a wonderful mess of a movie, amateurish in so many ways, but buoyed by Coyne’s inventiveness and enthusiasm.  Lots of weird sets and scenes and conversations (the f-word thrives), all hackneyed beyond belief.

The soundtrack is rather cool.  After a scene was shot, the Flaming Lips would come up with music for it.  Sometimes there’d be a loud point in the music that interfered with dialog, so they’d have to change the music.  But sometimes they liked the music so much that they reshot the scene so the dialog avoided the loud points.  An intriguing approach to mating film and soundtrack.  I don’t think there were any theramins, but the music has a very science fictiony atmosphere to it.

In terms of realistically depicting life on Mars, well, this falls a bit short of The Martian.  But at least it didn’t commit the cardinal sin of a powerful windstorm!  Grrrr....

Could be a DOOM candidate.
I'm nobody's pony.
