Well alright then. Bottlerock, day 3, which is the most entertaining day, at least musically speaking as I've already shared the boob-job-ass-licker tale which occured during day 3.
The first band was They went Ghost. They had a red, green & gold banner and did some white reggae, played like rock, which was almost satisfying as it was the closest thing to reggae for this whole show.
Then I caught Vintage Trouble, who were dressed up in riverboat vests and ties. There were soulful and groovy and got good response with their 'make some noise'. Lots of dancing wimmin which is always a good sign that something is going on musically.
Then there was Alabama Shakes. I walked in just as she started in on her big hit, Hold on. Damn, what a voice. Amazing. Such soul. I might have a new diva to worship - the antidote to glam divas. She sings with this raw authenticity and has a huge mouth. She really only has one guitar trick, rapid chord strumming, but she does it well. Very satisfying, so much so, I was getting misty as I haven't been moved by music in a while. I seriously thought I lost some of my hearing range recently, but she restored my faith in the power of great music.
Flaming Lips were the only group I saw to decorate their stage. They had this crazy array of light cable tentacles sprawled from the mike over a clutch of chrome alien eggs climbing like ivy up the backstage tv screen. It was actually toned down from their usual theatrics, but big for bottlerock. I've seen Lips before but I don't really know their songlist and was told by a doc friend who is a big fan that it was mostly new stuff.
The last act was Black Keys, but prior to them was some burlesque show. I saw the burlesque gals earlier, typical sexy skanky extrovert types - the day before they had a table next to the official bottlerock merch booth where they took pictures for donations. Two guys in a row stripped down to their tighty-whiteys for the shot. Those dudes had great bods and I would have done likewise if I had a bod like that. But they didn't show to open for the Keys. Meanwhile, my partner-in-crime, Capt hardy, who I had pawned off my radio and delegated as head-o-psych, was trying to sneak backstage. So there was this awkward 'should we? shouldn't we?' moment. Mind you, I was out of completely uniform, looking very casual, when up steps an old friend couple who had backstage passes because he manages a hotel that the Keys were staying at. "going up?" they ask. "why yes, yes I am" replies Dm. So dm got to see the entire Black Keys set from the stage left balcony. This was the first time I saw them live. Wow. A two-piece. Gotta respect that. They had a keyboard and additional guitar for some of the songs, but I could barely hear them. That drummer Carney is an orangutan, beating out rhythms like some mad alpha male. And the Auerbach can wail on guitar and vocals. Good stuff. A very satisfying way to end Friday night (my final music act for BottleRock as I left Sat morn). Late Sat nite, I got a text from Capt Hardy saying he got busted for being backstage by RM supervisors. I just had to laugh at that.
I enjoyed BottleRock immensely. I hope to work it again next year. It's too rich for my blood to buy tix.
