Thousands of angry East Bay residents complained to local police departments Saturday night when an outdoor rave concert at the Oakland Coliseum rattled windows from Alameda to San Leandro.
The "Beyond Wonderland" dance party featured three separate outdoor stages and 24 electronic acts from 6 p.m. Saturday to 2 a.m. Sunday.
Nearby residents said the booming bass could be heard and felt miles away.
We were "disturbed by an impossibly loud rave that went on for hours, with thumping music so loud that it caused vibrations to our house - even with all the windows closed," said Natalie Dolgireff, a resident of Alameda.
Police dispatchers in Alameda received 1,900 phone calls from 7 p.m. to 2 a.m., said Alameda police Capt. Paul Rolleri. On an average Saturday night, dispatchers might receive 300 calls in that time period, he said.
"That entire time period, the switchboard just continued to light up," he said. "It was frustrating for us because there was literally nothing we could do, it is not our event, it is not our city."
In San Leandro, police had to call in backup dispatchers to handle the hundreds upon hundreds of calls from across the city, said police Lt. Randy Brandt.
"It impacted out ability to filter through the dispatches," he said.
Oakland police, who have jurisdiction over the area, did not respond to requests for comment.
AEG, the entertainment conglomerate that runs the Coliseum, and the city of Oakland apologized for the noise.
We "completely understand and acknowledge that the volume of the sound produced during (Saturday) night's show caused discomfort and inconvenience to our neighbors," they said in a joint statement.
Oakland City Councilman Ignacio De La Fuente, who sits on the Coliseum's governing board, said the events should have been held indoors.
"Next time we get them inside the arena, not outside," he said. "We don't run the facilities; we are not the experts on this. They are.
"We have to make sure that those types of events won't happen again on the outside," he added. "We have to make sure it doesn't happen again."
