Elsbeth
#1
(02-27-2024, 08:57 AM)Drunk Monk Wrote: Elsbeth

From the Goodverse (Good Wife, Good Fight). She's a hilarious character. I'm in.

Well the pilot was fun. This is completely different than The Good Wife or The Good Fight. It’s like a police procedural, only backwards. Elsbeth is sent to ‘observe’ an NYC police department due to some previous bad issues but winds up being cleverer than any of the cops. The ep started with the crime, which we get to see in full - we know who the perp is and how it was done at the onset. Then the game is watching how Elsbeth unravels the case and catches the murderer. What makes it work is Elsbeth, who is still a delightfully quirky socially awkward yet unapologetic character. I’m here for this.

Not D00M recommended unless you’re into the Good-verse which I assume none of you are since none of you commented that you were watching on my previous thread on The Good Fight (where Elsbeth is mentioned) http://www.brotherhoodofdoom.com/doomFor...thread.php

Saw her on Colbert show. Might watch since this will be airing on regular TV as well. Although the pilot came out last Thursday as a special. Regular season starts in April.

It’s pretty stand-alone. You don’t need to know her backstory from the previous Good-verse appearances but perhaps it helps. She was more in The Good Wife.

2 more eps in. Stacy & I both giggled at bits. It’s a quirky police procedural because we see the murder at the beginning and know who the perp is - the story is to see how Elsbeth unravels it, despite the pd always insisting on the guilt of the red herring. Although ep 2 had a bit of a twist that Stacy called out right away, before the murder was even shown - that was impressive. Elsbeth finds the fun in every murder, which is as quirky as it sounds.

We saw the Pilot. The Queen said she had seen enough. She actually watched the first fifteen minutes with her mom down in FLA and bailed then. I recorded two other episodes from last Thursday and might watch one more.

It’s a howcacthem (aka inverted detective story) which begins showing the crime and the perp, then it’s all about the detective solving it. The quirkiness echos Monk or Columbo, only with a female lead. It’s closer to Columbo because that was also a howcatchem.

We love the character from the Good-verse. Perhaps her backstory helps.

E4 - still enjoyable. It’s the only show Stacy & I watch together right now.

I caught Ep02 and I've seen enough to know I don't need to see any more shows.

Gina Gerson. I had been wondering what became of her. Here she’s the murderer, a lesbian plastic surgeon no less.

The beginning of this ep was the first that reminded me of The Good Fight. It juxtaposed classic music to some satirical commentary on social media.

Keegan-Michael Key. Stacy called the murder just seconds into the first scene.

In the following ep, I called the solve - the dog obvs.

We both snickered at points. There’s something oddly satisfying about calling out murder mysteries, even howcatchems.

Penultimate ep - the murder case was kinda flat. It was more about setting up the finale. The major arc seems put to bed but a follow-up issue arose that threatens the possibility of a season 2. I’m sure they’ll resolve it.

I’ll probably watch the finale tomorrow night.

Ok, so I’m a night late.

The finale broke form from howcatchem to a more conventional police procedural. It was ridiculous and quirky as Elsbeth becomes the muse of an NY high fashion designer. But it was funnier, or perhaps I was just giving with the show’s sense of humor more. My fav line was something like ‘a lot of people died but it was fun.’  All conflicts are resolved and Elsbeth can stay for s2, should it get renewed. And we’ll tune in again for that.

Not D00M recommended especially in light of Greg & tQ’s rejection. I suppose I have a soft spot for any show where the female lead isnt just a pretty face.

S2e1 had Nathan Lane as an opera fanboy who gets so pissed at a rude person seated in front of him that he stabs him to death. Stacy could totally relate.

They’ve changed Elsbeth’s look to make her more attractive but that somewhat spoils the character’s charm. There are several callback to s1. Lane is a good villain. He held this ep together with his hamminess, perfect for the over the top opera fan.

The one time I went to the opera as an adult everyone was pretty much dead quiet. I think it was the last time I experienced that.

S2e2 was about billionaires posing as astronauts. Not as funny or relatable as the previous ep, but Tara was a classmate of Cameron Bess, who flew on SpaceX, and this murder involves a young astronaut like Cameron who also went up with his dad.

As a footnote, Tara and most of her circle have lost track of Cameron. After his space flight, he tried to become an influencer as the first pansexual astronaut and none of his school friends could tolerate him anymore.
