Sheltering in Place
It's been a quiet Memorial Day. Stacy is out taking care of some private clients. I've been home, surfing the net, downloading some more KFM files (crossed the halfway point for ezine art - not calculating cover stories yet, but I should probably grab those files too), and writing a bit. The writing is my comfort head space, mostly directed to my blog nowadays, queueing up ideas and future posts. My neighbor across the street played taps by the flag on trumpet. That was nice. Talked to the property manager who came by to check on the repairs for the lot-sharing house in back. Talked to Tara who is doing a paper related to our family for an Amer-azn class. I should pack for tomorrow.

I've been sleeping better however. Going down around 10-11 and waking around 6 but then just lying there for an hour or two, maybe dozing a little more, maybe surfing the web.

Went for a walk. Thought about going to the ocean but decided to explore some of the nook neighborhoods near the San Lorenzo. Glad I did because I bumped into an old friend. I knew she lived around there somewhere, which was in part why I was exploring that area. She worked at MQ6 and was at Dan's wake. We chatted for a bit - compared experiences. It was comforting. She retired to the Cruz a few years ago and spends her time painting and going to AA meetings.

I was pondering how sharp the minutiae of daily life has become more pronounced (obvs from my daily trivia posts here). My brain started composing that into an essay about Bodhidharma and isolation. Maybe that's a future blog post. Sometimes I can't think without thinking about how to write something up.

Day 68: This should be the final office clearing day, although I'll spend some of it getting Kevin up to speed on KFM. That's going to be challenging. KFM admin isn't easy. It's not a wordpress template or anything like that. TC bought the site which was custom built by some IT friends of TC's IT, and they bought a load there. There's a lot of admin functions and formating buttons but a lot of them don't work. It's like the Winchester Mystery House - doors and stairways that lead to nowhere. And it's fragile. Make the wrong turn and the site crashes. Over the years, Patrick, Matt & I have built in a complex set of workarounds to get the results we needed. As I've been plumbing their work, I realize how complex it has become. Some of those workarounds are in the code. I hope Kevin is up to the task but I don't know how html capable he is.

Then it's my mom's tonight. Probably need to do some shopping for her.

Woke last night at 2AM to that ol' brain circus, but went back to sleep in a half hour or so. My jaw still hurts.

Dreading going into TC today. Hopefully, after this is done, going back will be an option. I intend to swing by again, mostly to check in with Jonny because he's not good on email. I'll leave in about an hour, after lunch.

Stacy dragged me out for a quick hike in Wilder, a mission to the Enchanted Forest. It was hot, too hot, and I had to bail. I ate too many chips and peanuts last night and got dehydrated. We'll attempt that trail again when it's cooler. Stacy says it's nice. Good views of the ocean... and the landfill.

brutal.

my mom's house is cool though, for the most part. the upstairs where i sleep is a feckin oven. had to open all the windows.

right now, my mom's housecleaners are here. they are super efficient - a few latinx women who tidy up nicely in about an hour. after they leave, i'll probably close the windows and then head to the market. then i'll make it back for those cool ocean breezes.

how's the weather at lynch lair?

I believe the outside is currently set to broil. We moved the kittens into a pen in our front room because we feared for their safety.

Not an ocean breeze to be found anywhere. Thank the heavens for solar powered AC!

I plan to bake sourdough bread today.  Two loaves, each done separately.  Cast iron pot needs an hour preheat before even starting.  At 500 degrees.

Mayhaps I'll wait 'til evening.  Or even night.

Or repipe the gas and move the oven outdoors.

how did that sourdough come out?

the postman never delivered today so we did not receive our anticipated netflix dvds. damnable covid.

i checked out the library streaming offerings and now have access to kanopy. hoopla and acorn are also available. however my wifi is being fussy tonight and won't even let me on youtube for very long. wifi works best on the north side of our bungalow.

i just took a benzo and washed it down with some whiskey in hopes that it alleviates my weird tmj-like jaw click (i know, i know, don't mix muscle relaxants with alcohol - don't be so damn judgey)

The sourdough came out well, except the parchment paper cements itself to the bottom and must be laboriously peeled off by dampening with a spray bottle and going real slow.  Even then, we'll be eating some parchment.  According to the web, the brand of parchment paper might be the culprit.  Will try Alcoa in the future.

Also cooked a quadruple batch of curried rice.  And a quadruple batch of vegetable stir fry.  It was a hot kitchen all evening.  But now we're set for an easy peasy food week.

I'm impressed with Kanopy.  A far greater selection than Hoopla, and it's well designed, easy to drill down to your interests or to search for stuff.
