S1e3 was another segue ep. The 'crew' is assembled. Nice to see Orla retained some of the fight skills from the Badlands. But another meh ep overall. There's Trekkie controversy about the cussing (been there with Disco already), the sunglasses (Vulcan is bright so that was...logical. I just wish they were cool space sunglasses not raybans), and the vaping (you'd think 23rd century delivery systems would be better). Still don't get Hugh - might have to follow up on those other eps. I do like Dahj, and Laris of course. Dr. Jurati is akin to Disco's Tilly - a nerd chick. This show needs a Vulcan.
Next week's ep goes to Romulan territory. I'm excited because the teaser had lots of... ...wait for it... ...swordfights! yay swords!

Yep Sword fights! Sword Effin Fights! Turns out there's a cult of Romulan nun assassins and the Romulans bear swords. Not goofy bat'leth thangs but proper basket hilts and katanas. They match the ears well. Why bother with swords when they have phasers? Who cares? Same thing happened in Disco but there was actually a decent reason for that. There's no real reason here in Picard, but it's all good. That being said, the sword fights aren't great so far, but at least they're present. And at the end of the ep, V's hottest borg appears but we knew it would be this ep because Jeri is listed in the opening credits. The ship La Sirena has an almost Rocinante vibe in they way it is designed, except for the holodeck. It doesn't feel that Trek, but again, who cares? The crew is assembled. Time to go boldly. Now we're cookin with dilithium.

Is a bear sword something the Yeti would use?

Yes, esp if it had a *bone* handle
In the Tudor Period, Fencing Masters were classified in the Vagrancy Laws along with Actors, Gypsys, Vagabonds, Sturdy Rogues, and the owners of performing bears.

It seems to me like it is going in two directions, in and out.

Well played!
![]() Extra points for the bandoliers ![]() ![]() You know, I been toying with writing a piece on the 'noble savage' for years. I had been thinking about Kato, and then Tonto, and Chewie getting his medal denied. Worf is a different case really because he winds up being one of the longest running characters in the franchise spanning TNG and DS9. BTW, I had to look up Jumja sticks. It's a Bajoran thing. ![]() ![]() But back to s1e4... ![]() Actually, this scene wasn't in s1e4. It was in the 'next week on Picard' end bumper. So yeah, I'm invested in next week's ep. 7 of 9? All in. Couldn't find an s1e4 sword fight gif yet. But here's the scene just prior to one with the new character Elrond. ![]() Sorry, not Elrond. Elnor. The mirror universe is so confusing. ![]()

Catching up with 7of9 was cool but would it be sexist to miss her borg catsuit? I never really understood that. I mean, yeah, I understood it as a device to showcase Ryan's classic Star Trek bodaciousness, but was it ever explained in Voyager why she had to wear that and couldn't wear a uniform like everyone else. That being said, Picard is still at sublight speed. This ep went to Free Cloud, a Vegas-like planet that is conceptually poached from Bladerunner. There was a cute reference to Tranya, Balok's drink of choice. But this is no ST: Disco...not yet at least. Still watching it in hopes that it'll pull off some major mcguffin and 'engage' me more deeply. Make it so. Dammit Jim, MAKE IT SO!

e6. still sublight. don't really care for the new characters except soji - she's a major protag and the only new character of interest. never liked hugh really. no more 7of9. a swordfight, but it was mostly dark and unimpressive. the nerd chick, 'han' rios, 'stoner' raffi - all meh. the deep dive into romulan culture just isn't working for me. narak is really annoying. rizzo is ok.
e7 promises riker (whose been directing some of these eps) and troi.
