Paris & Rome 2018
#1
Just because Dm is a horrible egotist, a neurotic epee provost who rejects knickers and someone who cannot but one-up his old kung fu siblings, yeah, Paris & Rome baby!  It's a family trip for the middle of August.  17 days for me, which is actually more than I can be away but WTH.  My family will stay over a week more.

The Louvre is a massive unchecked box on my bucket list - it has been there since I was a teenager back in the Pleistocene era.  We are starting to sort the rest and are open to DOOM suggestions/advice.

My Rome memories are pretty fresh.

First thing, rewatch Roman Holiday.

Cool.

Absolutely.  Audrey (Hepburn, not the one who shouldn't be named here) was never more luminous than when she was in B&W.

Rome? I loves me some Rome. Rick Steves has it right. Also, Tripadvisor nailed the restaurants. Poke your head inside every damn church. Enjoy!

Getting so close to take off. I got a new rucksack for the trip because my last one was stolen and the rest of my luggage is too big or too small. It’s a nice Eagle Creek piece - my best travel gear is that brand. Also dug out my power converter and am sorting various travel gear.

Stacy left for Tassajara this morning. Tara follows her tomorrow. So it’s just me and the murderous feline this week. The bungalow water heater failed yesterday and our landlord can’t get it looked at until Wednesday. I must’ve tried to restart it a dozen times now. Got so mad yesterday that I punched and left perfect knuckle impressions in it.

At this point we have Museum/site tix & hotel/Airbnb reservations for Paris, Geneva, Florence & Rome. There’s some wiggle room but not much. After I come home, my family plans to head to the Greek isles for like 2 weeks.

I don’t feel ready. I’ve been failing with my Italian language DVDs and neglecting pre-trip research. Still excited of course - looking forward to the adventure.

Yay, Florence. If I go back to Italy, Florence would be my first stop.

And the first thing I want to do is use the Vasari Corridor that goes from the Uffizzi Palace across the Ponte Vecchio to the Pitti Palace. It was the private corridor for the rulers of Florence. It was closed for renovations last time I was there. It might be a total dud. But I still need to traverse. And so should you!

Call me for more Florence Tips.

Greg, that was closed both times I was there too! And I think that's where they have Michelangelo's only easel painting; I never could find it anywhere.

DM, I'm sure you'll hit the Uffizzi and the Accademia (which has not only the Michelangelo Captives, but also a great collection of Gothic altarpieces), but I also recommend the Palazzo Davanzati, a late Medieval / early Renaissance house museum. Also the Museo dell'Opera Duomo, where you can see Michelangelo's late Pieta, and Donatello's Mary Magdalene.

Thanks for the tips all.  Got the multipass for Uffizzi, Accademia & Duomo, plus the Stibbert too of course (renowned for its arms & armor collection - aside from the obvious tourist sites, armouries are what I really love seeing).  We're only in Florence for a few days so I'll be dashing from site to site.  Actually, that's true for the entire trip.  Packing a lot in to a very short time.  My family can relax after I leave in those Greek Isles. Me, I'll go back to work and reminisce.

Those Dark Rome tours are pricey.  We've secured tix directly at 1/2 to 1/3 the price.

I am bringing my laptop because I'll have to check in at work (the burden of my position now) but I don't know if I'll be blogging here so much.  Maybe. Depends on my state of insomnia. We'll see.  Will definitely follow up afterwards because gloating is what DOOM>Travel is all about, right?

I was paying for the skip the line convenience in a lot of case.

Michelangelo plaza is where you can get great views of the city. It's across the river and up the hill in Florence.

You can get those directly from many of the official sites now - you don't need to go through a broker.  Actually, it's all kind of different now because the less crowded backdoor entrances at many sites are disclosed on the web so they aren't as secretive anymore.  We'll just see how it all pans out.  It's tourist season and super hot when I'm going so I have to resign myself to that part of it.

Go, DM, go. Bring a hat. Wear sunscreen. Don't buy tours from people on the street.

Will this image soon be found on the Victory Fencing Gear FB page? Oh, yes — I think so!
