The footage in Chimpanzee is amazing, especially when you consider that it's not special effects, just great camera work and fascinating subjects. The narration and 'storyline' was contrived and distracting. For example, the evil band of chimps were only huge ugly chimps, led by Scar (a name right out of Lion King), whereas in reality, I'm sure that bigger band of chimps had plenty of cute little chimps too. As for the narration, Tim Allen is another actor who I would like to punch in the nose for no rational reason. He's right up there with Gwyneth Paltrow and Michael Cera for me. It would have been better narrated by Jane Goodall, or perhaps no narration at all. The nut cracking scenes, and all the tool use scenes were engaging enough on their own. The soundtrack went to jazz - would have much rather had something more Soweto or even Kwaito for the raid scenes. The biggest surprise was there was some great mushroom footage - glowing shrooms like in Avatar, but real. The end credits had a little 'how it was filmed' bit and that was really good too.
