This is the long awaited doc on Bob Marley, originally an undertaking of Scorsese, then Demme, then finally completed by Kevin McDonald (Last King of Scotland). It opens in limited release on 4/20. It's very good, albeit a little longwinded, but contains several choice tidbits of rare footage (Marley and Stevie Wonder!) and some great interviews. It has a sense of humor that is very rasta. Marley's life was inspirational, so if you don't know his story, this is a fine doc. It covers all the high points, and also the dark side - his illness, his womanizing, perspectives on him from his kids Ziggy and Cedella, and so on. Nine Mile, Trenchtown, 56 Hope Rd., all places I've been to for rasta pilgrimages, are captured well. There's a chance I'll get an interview with Ziggy for this next week. Keep your fingers crossed for me.

Now I just got to make that tie to kung fu. :roll:

Nice use of the red and green type coloring.

Ziggy also appeared on our local radio station today. It probably wasn't the best interview of Ziggy's career.

The green hides the hyperlinks a little, which is bothersome, but you can't have everything.

So this was originally supposed to be a round table interview, but the other two reporters failed to make it. So I got a one-on-one, the last one of the day for Ziggy, which is my fav spot. Even though they are tired by then, they tend to be more relaxed and drop their guard a little more.

Oh, and it was held at the Ritz Carlton in Half Moon Bay. Swanky.

Sometimes, my job is not so bad.

It aired on VH1 last night. I kept snippets in between Olympics. (Oh, Olympics. I can't quit you) The one thing I didn't know but know now is that SKA was the precursor to reggae.

Unfortunately, it hasn't been scheduled to air again so I can record it and watch. The other thing I did pick up on was that Marley's daughter didn't seem all that impressed by her father. She wasn't too happy about the womanizing, so much.

You couldn't hear the connection between ska and reggae?

I thought they came at the same time. I didn't realize one fed the other.

...that sort of comes in between, but it's really only known in reggae circles. Ska evolves into Two-Tone (which brings us bands like The Police) and then there's 3rd wave ska (re: No Doubt). I've got a lot of old ska from Marley and the progenitors of reggae. Reggae is basically ska slowed down, minus the 'one drop' which comes from nyabinghi drumming.

So here's a question for you - if reggae is ska slowed down, what is ska speeded up?

You get Polka. Seriously. David Lindley could do it. He'd ramp up a reggae tune to ska and then all of a sudden, it was polka. And everyone would be getting their groove on to it.
