This was my fourth Pinback show.
Bimbo's is really my favorite venue. Reasonably priced food and drrinks, nice tables with a good view and decent sound.
Getting there was a bit of an ordeal.
Critical Mass + Halloween Weekend = S.F. chaos.
I got pissed off at the bike riders ignoring the traffic lights so I floored it when I saw a small gap. I figured the damage to my car would be minimal if I hit some stupid bike. I got yelled at by some dirty hippie but I figured that someone who can't tell the difference between a red and green light shouldn't be contributing to the human gene pool anyway.
Because I chose that moment to plow through the sea of bicycles I got to Bimbo's just as a car was leaving a parking spot right in front of the club! Awesome! Almost killed a colorblind hippie AND a great parking spot!
The opening band was Frightened Rabbit. They were a 3-piece from Scotland with a great folk-rock sound. I actually bought their CD based on how entertaining they were.
Pinback came on around 10PM. They launched into a 75 minute set and boy, were they tight. Rob Crowe's voice was in top form (unlike last year when he seemed to have a cold). The synchopated rhythms sounded even more like a finely tuned watch due to some great sound work from the mixer.
The bass went ba-dunk, ba-dunk, ba-dunk. The guitar went plink-plink-plink, plink-plink-plink, plink-plink-plink. The drums went tick-tock, tick-tock, tick-tock. The keyboards and other instruments chimed every second, on the second.
The highlights were 'Fortress' and 'Syracuse'. They did not do 'Tripoli' or 'Grey Machine' which made me sad.
I bought their new album on vinyl which, interestingly enough, contains a coupon with a code that allows you to download it from their website in MP3 format.
All in all a good time was had by all. Except maybe by some bike riders with a misplaced sense of entitlement.
