Nothing Compares
#1
A doc on Sinead from last year. It starts out rather stylish, lots of random imagery to set up the time. But when your subject is Sinead, there’s so much story to tell that the artsy scenes were a total waste of time. It felt almost as if the documenters had this grand stylish vision and then realized that Sinead’s story was so compelling that they should just focus on her and they fail to get to the end.

There’s some great early footage of Sinead. The over dubbing shows a harsh contrast in what happened to her speaking voice which is demure, almost shy as a youth, but deepens to an almost manly voice but the end. This charts her rise from a strict border school to the chart topping Nothing Compares (which the Prince estate would not allow the video to be used) to the US anthem protest, then the snl episode followed by the Dylan tribute concert. It traces her reggae roots but it never gets into her conversion to Islam. The only nod is the end credit song - Thank you for Hearing Me - where she’s burka-ed.

She was so stunning in her twenties. So powerful and vulnerable. Absolutely drop dead gorgeous. And that voice is so incredible.

There wasn’t any revelations in the doc that I didn’t know but it was still worth the watch for the old concert footage is extraordinary.ultimately it’s a mediocre doc about an incredible singer so still with the watch even with its moments.

I was sure I reviewed this when it was on Showtime...I think other doomers were in the thread. Maybe it was just in my head.
