A new retelling of the Ramayana with Prabhas as Ram. It’s terrible. It so wants to be Bahubaali, an epic visionary fantasy but this time rooted in one of India’s greatest tales (Prabhas was the lead in Bahubaali). But it is hampered by weak cgi and way too much dramatic slow mo.

I almost gave up but I was eager to see if the siege of Lanka had any gems like Bahubaali, which has the most over the top siege sequences ever. It doesn’t. There’s one good one - these giant yo-yo saw blades that drop down the castle walls to repel the climbing monkeys. But that’s it. That’s the problem with this film. There’s several moments that are good drowning in a swamp of bad cgi.

It’s a shame because some of the design is interesting. I like how Hanuman and Ravana are depicted. And the actors are all good, even if their physiques are digitally enhanced (I kinda liked that because it made them look more like their temple icons). These good moments are way too few and far in between, especially considering this is a 3+ hour film.

It flopped hard in India. I can see why. If you’re going to have a special effect driven film, the special effects better be awesome. While there are a few imaginative ones, most look like a video game from 15 years ago.

It did stay fairly loyal to the tale. It reminded me of many episodes I had forgotten. It’s a great story and that shines through at moments, but it’s so overdone that it gets tiresome.

I warned Stacy that it was bad. She popped her head in anyways and was at first taken by its sweeping imagery, but saw through it after about 5 mins. It’s like a 3+ hour music video from before the millennium turned.

Not D00M recommended.
