Hollywood Division by Joseph Wambaugh
#1
The Blue knight is back. Let's hear it for the LAPD!

I read some of his early novels back in the day but just found them too bleak. The picture they painted of life in the police force didn't make it look very appealing.

With the new book it seems nothing has changed except for the fact the LA police force is now under the watchful eye of our benevolent government. It's not pretty.

I think the way Wambaugh goes about writing novels is he goes to the guys on the beat and gets their anecdotes. He then puts their stories into the mouths of his characters. He fleshes this out with a procedural about a diamond robbery. Everybody ends up dead at the end.

Not as much drug and alcohol abuse in the police force as in the early novels. But the cops still work under a tremendous burden that only cops can understand. It's a thankless job etc etc.

This book falls under the category of books I read because I know the actual locations. I don't know why this entertains me so much, but it does.

Thank the library for loaning me this book
So much for the flickr badge idea. Dammit
