Big Chief Elizabeth by Giles Milton

The author also wrote Nathaniel's Nutmeg which was a big seller, and Samurai William, which is about the Englishman in Japan in the 1600s who was the basis for Clavell's Shogun.

But I digress. This one was about the English colonization of Virginia. I enjoyed it very much. He's a good writer, and there were numerous interesting people, particularly Walter Raleigh (who incidentally never spelled his last name that way). Also some interesting stuff about the European adoption of smoking (then called "drinking smoke").
