Snow Trail (1947) by Senkichi Taniguchi
#1
Another Toshirô Mifune/Takashi Shimura vehicle, not directed by Kurosawa, but co-scripted by him.  It is the oldest movie in criterion's current Mifune retrospective.

Mifune and Shimura are part of a robber gang heading into the snowy mountains to hide out, with the law in hot pursuit.  They clash ever more over moral and ethical issues as they interact with each other and others and the environment.

Not a lot of surprises here, but Mifune's intensity and charisma are on full display, with Shimura playing perfectly against him.

When Kurosawa first used Mifune in Drunken Angel a year later, it was based on seeing Mifune in all his intensity on another set, or in the rushes from some-such, and this might have been that movie.

On a side note, Taniguchi also directed International Secret Police: Key of Keys (1965), famously re-dubbed and re-released as What's Up, Tiger Lily? by Woody Allen.  And no, I have not seen this.  (Did I hear recently that it hasn't aged well?)

I'm rather enjoying your binge here cf.  I should follow suit on some of these, just for dialog's sake. However, none of my platforms have access.

You should check out the Mifune doc too sometime - http://www.brotherhoodofdoom.com/doomFor...p?tid=3945

I don't think I've seen this one.  I have seen What's Up, Tiger Lily?  a few times, although not recently. I was a big fan of Allen for many years and still enjoy his work despite his scandals. The last time I saw it, and I don't remember when that was, it didn't work for me so well.  I can't remember why.  Maybe because by then, the overdub joke had been done to death. Maybe I'd already seen enough fansubtitles by then to know the reality is far funnier than any scripted jokes. It's probably worth your attention however, especially after this vintage J-flick binge. I have always been idly curious about the original.

The last criterion entry in the Mifune retrospective is that documentary.  I'm looking forward to that.

By the way, did you ever see The Lost World of Sinbad (1963)?  I noticed it by chance among Taniguchi's oeuvre, with Mifune playing Sinbad.  But it's not in the retrospective.
