It's supposed to be a chandleresque story of Shanghai in the '20s. It's too bad they left out the chandleresque part. You know gripping dialogue, hardboiled detectives, femme fatales, and drama.
They got the set in Shanghai part right but after that it was all down hill. It didn't really give me any inisght into the international city of the time. It gave me English colonialism but nothing that hasn't been done better elsewhere.
The hero is a wimp. He's dragged along by events. He's told a million times not to mess around with the russian girls because they are all just liars. No foundation is ever given for this, but everybody in Shanghai, but our erstwhile hero, knows this to be true.
If he just said one clever thing. If he just did something cool. He gets beat up. He gets shot at. All I'm saying is I wish the shooter had finished the job.
