That Demon Within (2014)
#1
Another film in my Daniel Wu research, this one directed by Dante Lam. And it's another one that's hallucinatory - Wu plays a messed up cop in modern-day Hong Kong, who unwittingly saves the life of the Demon King, a cop-killing crook who leads a small band of thieves that don demon masks ala Five Deadly Venoms. The action is extremely sanguineous - limbs get graphically blown off in the first big fire fight - and the hallucinations are suitably trippy. No swordfights but extra points must be given for a pick-axe fight. Lots of explosions, head smashing and flying bullets. All in all, quite satisfying ultravi. And I'm really growing to respect Wu's work. He delivers an edgy psycho performance here that is thoroughly engaging, the kind of character that starts out as endearing but is horribly flawed - his descent into madness is both tragic, logical given the back story, and compelling.
