RIP Rainbow Mountain Walker
#1
He wasn't a close friend, but I knew him from the emerald triangle music festivals like RotR, Gaia, and earthdance. He was a very colorful figure, an old hippie mountain scroat type, tough as tanned leather.

The first report said he was eaten by a bear. That really messed with my head. I don't know anyone who has been eaten by a bear.

A later report postulates that he collapsed somehow and was drug off by a bear and eaten. There was no sign of struggle and he packed heat, but there was no evidence that he tried to shoot to defend himself. They found his body, or his stripped bones, near to his home in the mountains, in an area that has clearly been occupied by a feasting bear.

What a harsh way to go. I guess it's still messing with my head, but not as much.

Not to make light. It's an unusual way to go. It's Gorey-esque

That postcard has been exchanged between DOOMers before - between me and PPFY. It was during the great DM mocking of PPFY's bonelessness, and PPFY shot back a wicked riposte with this very card with "You know what Basil said..." written on the back (or something to that effect).

Like I said, Rainbow and I weren't close. We worked together for many years but I didn't really know him beyond that, until now.

Quote:Black bear eats Northern California man who died of heart attack - LA Times

Authorities say a black bear ate the body of a Humboldt County man after he died of a heart attack on his way to check his water supplies.

Marion Lee Williams, 65, died sometime last week not far from his property, which is where the bear had also apparently created a home for itself, said Humboldt County Deputy Coroner Roy Horton.

The bear probably came across Williams, who had collapsed and died of a heart attack, then dragged his body into a cave to eat.

Investigators used Williams' fingerprints, dentures and pieces of clothing to identify him.

"The bear does not pose a public threat," Hughan said. "It was just doing what bears do."

Williams lived alone and "off the grid" in a trailer in the community of Briceland, six miles west of Redway, authorities said.

He was last seen on Oct. 8, but his friends did not report him missing until Saturday.

When his friends still hadn't heard from him, they searched his property and found his remains.

I never knew his real name until I read it in the reports.

I used to have the BONE on my SiValley pre-set in the Fit. It's stupid 'classic' rock, lame bay area shock jocks with tata tuesday shows and such. Sometimes my inner redneck longs for some Bob Seger tunes. They do these parodies which are always crass. The did one on Mountain. Yogi Bear and Boo Boo were joking about eating his 'twig and berries'. It totally pissed me off to hear it. But then I thought about it, and even though I didn't really know Mountain that well, I imagine he would have chuckled at it. Nevertheless, I switched my pre-set to SJSU's college station, as that is a goodly chunk of my commute.
