So dm was looking forward to catching up a little this weekend after his 2019 TCEC>CaliRoots>Dead&Co run. Then DM's invisible friend starts texting about the Mykal Rose show. Says he can get DM on the list. Free show? Impossible to resist.
The show was supposed to be Rose backed by Sly & Robbie but Robbie got sick. That was a bit of a bummer. It wasn't sold out, but the crowd got thick by the headliner. There was two opening acts, a gal dm didn't know (came in during her set and wasn't really paying attention) and then Irie Rockers. IR wasn't bad towards the end but it was getting late and dm suddenly remembered how late reggae can go and regretted his decision to go out, even for the legendary Rose. Nevertheless it was good to see him in an intimate setting like Moes. Moes has great bottom for reggae. The crowd was big peeps - lots of dudes averaging 6+ft & 250+ lbs. dm felt short and kinda scrunched, but it was all good. No waitresses brought drinks and dm + invisible were sandwiched in so it was too much of a bother to go for drinks. It's just as well. Rose started out very strong with some Black Uhuru classics - Solidarity was particularly enjoyable. Then around the 11:30 mark he seemed to gas out, getting rather stony in his chant and relying too much on his call-response schtick. Maybe it was dm gassing out and projecting but the crowd thinned out significantly. It ended after midnight sometime.
This morning, Stacy got up early to tend to my mom. I wasn't far behind and would've got to work early but I missed my damn exit by 3 so I lost a good 20 mins circling back and actually wound up a bit late. Hopefully that's the only lack-o-sleep mistake I make today. Upon reflection, it was a poor choice to go out last night - even for a free show from a legendary reggae icon.
