Vampire Girl vs. Frankenstein Girl (2009) by Yoshihiro Nishimura, Naoyuki Tomomatsu
#1
One has to wonder what might have been had this movie starred Tom Hanks.  First off, would he have played Frankenstein Girl or Vampire Girl?  I suspect both, giving rise to something more along the lines of Captain Philips vs. Sully, a sure-fire Oscar contender to my mind.  But Tom Hanks is not in this movie, and instead we're stuck with two gorgeous Asian ladies, which I'll forgive and so should you.

I expected this movie to be junk.  It's been in my Netflix queue for ages, and each time it approached the top, I pushed it back down.  But eventually it snuck through to my doorstep.  And it's better than I expected.

It's of the sanguineous school of horror, with fountains of bright red blood at every turn, and over-the-top fights and special effects.  While uneven, with a plot that occasionally sputters (and includes an offensive depiction of blacks), this is some inventive and inspired filmmaking, with competent camerawork that occasionally rises to impressive.  What really brings continuity to the whole piece is the musical score by Blood-Soaked Fellow.  Whether this is a person, group, or company, it carries this movie.

Far from a masterpiece, and not to oversell it, but a pleasant surprise.

Subtitles aren't crucial to enjoyment.  Could make a decent DOOM movie for talking over.

I've seen some of this. It was at Kung Fu Brother Nesto's, who speeds past any and every plot in any film just for fight scenes. I think he watches too much porn and plays too many videogames. If you just watch the fight scenes in this film, all the red-producing enzymes in your retinas will be lee Hernandez out for a few days following.

But yeah, Hanks would've added.
