Beltracchi: The Art of Forgery
#1
It's a documentary. In German. With sub-titles.

I know you are all just salivating to watch this one. You should it's very well done.

Basically, Beltracchi was one of the biggest Art Forger's of his time, having copied over 50 masters and did hundreds of forgeries. Although he was only convicted of forging 14 paintings.

The doc is very story like. It follows Beltracchi as he goes about his life in France and Germany. You don't really find out about his crimes until late in the movie. The one thing the movie shows is his technique for making a forgery and about faking the provenance of the painting. You get the sense that it is all just a game to him and he would start again in a second. And the only reason he was caught is because rather than grinding his own pigments for one of the paintings he just used a tube of white paint. Hoisted by his own petard.

It's a very different style of documentary. His crimes are alluded to rather than at the forefront. You have to piece the story together yourself, but I enjoyed that.

The one thing I did learn was that if I go to prison, I'm going to go to prison in Germany. Beltracchi was let out of his cell every day so he could go home and paint and filmĀ this movie. The prison also allowed the filmmakers into the prison so they could watch Beltracchi in prison. What was he doing in there? Painting.
As a matter of fact, my anger does keep me warm
