The Last Apprentice series by Joseph Delaney
#1
I’m currently on book 4 of 13. Reminds me of “The Name of the Wind.” It’s not as well-written as that, but it’s got a very similar vibe. So, main character is 13 year-old Tom, who is the 7th son of a 7th son, and he’s been apprenticed out to a “Spook” (amusingly named Old Gregory), a guy who fights witches, boggarts and various other creatures of “the dark.” In each story so far, the formula is that there’s a particular baddie that needs to be subdued and then either imprisoned in a pit or destroyed, and Tom learns how to do that and does, usually surpassing his master’s expectations and sometimes his capabilities (but the kid screws up regularly and his ability to fail makes him a little more interesting. I’m enjoying the character growth so far, and the lack of teen angst.
Before you criticize someone, walk a mile in their shoes. That way when you criticize them, you're a mile away and you have their shoes.
