The Art of Self Defense

I disdain Eisenberg. But he was okay in this. Too bad this sucked. Jesse was actually the best part...at the start.

It starts out as a black comedy, droll deadpan humor about an assault victim who takes up karate. Then it gets super dark, a grisly examination of cults. If it went either direction, it might have worked but the two together didn’t mesh. Should I giggle or be horrified? Totally predicted the Mcguffin, but didn’t think it would go that dark. It’s one of those films that just gets absurd quickly - like surely someone would notice the body count, and Jesse’s transition from milktoast victim to alpha ‘karateka’ wasn’t convincing. It puts karate in a really negative light. Imogene’s character almost had depth - it was like she was trying so hard to act her way out of this mess. The sensei was good. Personally I preferred the funny bits. It’s got some decent reviews so maybe it appeals to the critic set (this was a critic only screener and many of the reporters knew each other - lots of shop talk prior to the screener). I don’t know who this might appeal to - who might be the audience. It’s not as light and funny as the trailer and poster imply.

Not DOOm worthy - maybe one of you might like it because you’re quirky odd, but I’m guessing not.

He's made several films that were sort of off-putting - Squid and the Whale comes to mind, as well as his portrayal of Zuckerberg - so I guess that's his thing.

Yeah, totally.  He's just annoying.  But he's actually okay in this.  The part fits him well.  It's just not that good a movie, despite his okay performance.
