So yeah, I posted about the call I was on - right in the middle of my break. I was on the concourse watching and the call was close to the lower concourse - several came on the call so I just stood back and did crowd control. Great view of the show.

Carlos, man. Still fire. He has such a signature approach to his screeching guitar riffs. Still got it. Saw his bassist & drummer do a jam. Word is Carlos injured his back (he was sitting through his performance) and is cancelling the rest of his tour. It was good to see him.

Older, clean crowd. 17K (SLA holds 22K?) Felt fairly full. Lots of walkers. Took a new nurse on walkabout. She just got married and had fresh henna - Nisha - she's Indian - so we had a nice walkabout. She hadn't been out back so I showed her the asshole of SLA (the dump burners) and we watched a gorgeous sunset from that vantage.

I worked table service for most of it. Ran into several friends in the audience, including my two DJ friends from the Cruz. They just separated after 27 years of marriage (on their anniversary!) - ugly break. Heard both sides. Drama. Weirded me out. I luv them both and don't want to take a side. Got selfies with both of them.

Ran into someone from the wulin and I was embarrassed because I couldn't pull up his name out of context (it's Ron - he's one of Tomizaki's peeps - good guy and always takes care of me at that event).

Had a great night. Connected with a lot of RMers that were surprisingly cool including someone who I've known but didn't know she was a PhD in physics and worked on the Hardrian (sp?) accelerator before it became that. Also a young Stanford kid named Max who is part of a lion dance club there.

Got a lot of mileage out of my pic with Carlos from lion dancing with the Grateful Dead.

Afterwards, four of us hit up the Sports Page, the local nearby. I used to hit it after shows back in the late 80s. Hadn't been back in maybe a quarter century. Twas Saira, Meghan, and the other Gene. Super fun to unwind afterwards with them. I've watched them all rise up in RM from the beginning. Meghan will finish nursing school in NYC in December. Saira is almost done with fire & paramed training. I'm hoping to recruit Gene into JM for the upcoming Monterey gigs.

We closed the Sports Page and I was home by 2. I'm enjoying some ramen, tinned eel, and finishing a bottle of Toki.

My folks' amazing tube-driven Magnavox is doing a Carpenter/Roan jam right now. They own this 2024 summer. Flashbacks to OSL.

Need to head back to the Cruz in 6 hours for an Immortal telemeeting (plus our property manager will be checking out our neighbor's roof). I should get some sleep before I travel...

This show was much more interesting than I thought it would be. That last flash of MercNRet.

You'd have to stop the world just to stop the feeling...

Ok, goodnight and JAH bless.

Stacy had thought about visiting it when we were in Geneva. My RM friend had photos of when she was working on its predecessor - looked like a big ol' sci-fi tunnel. She said it was like being able to play with the most expensive toy train set in the world. I've known her for a few years now but didn't know about her work. It all came out when she proudly showed my a pic of her son who just graduated with a degree in physics, and then said that both she and her husband were physics PhDs, and then her wild story came out.

As for my spelling, note that I posted that 10 hours ago and it's now 1:30, so you can do the math.

Hoping the best for Carlito

Quote:Carlos Santana, who criticized Bay Area crowd as ‘old people’s home,’ cancels tour dates due to health issues
By Aidin Vaziri, Staff WriterAug 29, 2024

Grammy-winning singer/guitarist Carlos Santana has canceled some tour dates to deal with health issues.

Carlos Santana has canceled some of his upcoming tour dates to undergo a “corrective procedure” for his back.
The news coincides with a contentious performance by the Grammy-winning guitarist at the Shoreline Amphitheatre in Mountain View on Tuesday, Aug. 27, during which the 77-year-old Rock & Roll Hall of Fame musician who was an integral part of the San Francisco music scene criticized the hometown crowd for its lack of energy.
“It feels like we are at the old people’s home,” Santana told the crowd of 17,000, according to a San Jose Mercury News concert review.
Santana, known for classics like “Black Magic Woman,” “Evil Ways” and “Smooth,” delivered a nearly two-hour set front-loaded with his greatest hits before co-headliners Counting Crows took the stage. He performed seated for much of the show, likely due to his persistent back issues.
As a result of his upcoming medical procedure, Santana has canceled shows in Phoenix and Albuquerque as well as a portion of his residency at the House of Blues Las Vegas. Ticketmaster will automatically refund tickets for these dates.
Despite these cancellations, Santana still planned to perform in San Diego on Friday, Aug. 30, and at the Fool in Love festival near Los Angeles on Saturday, Aug. 31.
“Carlos looks forward to seeing everyone post-procedure,” said a statement from his representatives posted Tuesday on social media, noting his return to the stage is expected to be at the House of Blues Las Vegas on Oct. 30.

I dunno, man. I feel like that Merc reporter got it wrong.

And Carlito was right. The crowd was elderly. When I said "Lots of walkers" I meant that there were more people with walkers or in wheelchairs than at the symphony. Almost all our calls were elderly issues - falls and syncopals.

I didn't realize his drummer was his wife. She was amazing. I only mentioned in passing that I 'saw his bassist and drummer do a jam' but that was awesome, all about her. Carlito always had the tightest percussion back up.

I thought that was his daughter - didn't realize it was his wife. She was in that mediocre drumming documentary (thread on here somewhere). I remember she dismissed jazz drummers, saying that they don't keep the beat. That made me think that she's an idiot.

That’s weird because she’s a jazz drummer.
