Disney has these tried and true formulas for filmmaking and every once in a while they work. It's very predictable - reoccurring lines building gravitas, no mother figures (whazzup with Disney and mothers?), obligatory song and dance numbers (classic Mencken, choreographed with almost Bollywood sensibilities), the redemption of characters, the in-joke self satirization, the coming of age and the loss of innocence - there's nothing really new and yet the elements combine to a descent flick, assuming you like Disney Princesses. This is Alice in Wonderland told backwards. Amy Adams steals the show as Giselle. She's totally believable in the role, an over-the-top hammy performance not unlike Garland as Dorothy or Anne Hathaway as Elle. Susan Sarandon vamps it up as the evil queen, but she'll always be Janet to me (except for when she's Louise) - there could have been more of her. The other characters are negligible and the effects are only of moderate interest. It's Amy that makes this work. Welcome to a new Disney princess.

Are you chomping at the bit for when you can take Tara to PG and PG-13 films?

...i'm enjoying watching these flicks in a nostalgic sort of way. there's a certain return to innocence that's a key facet of parenthood. it's very refreshing, but hard to convey to non-parents.
plus enchanted is pg, and tara has already seen a few pg-13s, albeit on dvd.

By "non-parents" do you mean "non breeder-cultists"?
In the Tudor Period, Fencing Masters were classified in the Vagrancy Laws along with Actors, Gypsys, Vagabonds, Sturdy Rogues, and the owners of performing bears.

Better than a kick in the head on a Saturday night. It was something the Queen wanted to see, too, so that was good. I liked the dress bits. Wanted to get out of the animation and into New York sooner. I did love the songs better in the film than I did at the Oscar telecast. All I kept thinking during the Oscars was "These are the best songs? YOu've got to be kidding me" But in the context of the movie , they worked really well. Ending flopped a little. I did like the game of find the classic Disney movie allusion. It could almost be a drinking game.
